Getting Ready for Sunday 8/28

Writer's picture: Luke HumphriesLuke Humphries

Let me begin with a verse from Amos...

This is what the Lord says to Israel: “Seek me and live; Amos 5:4

So I urge you to seek Christ as if your life depends on it... because it does. Seek the face of God as if there is nothing better to see... because there isn't. Do this and you will live.

THIS SUNDAY

As you read through chapters nine (and even ten), be asking yourself, what made Jesus' work as High Priest more effective than the Levitical Priests? Don't settle for the easy answer before you ever start to read, but look for the answer as you read the text.

...how much more will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without blemish to God, purify our conscience from dead works to serve the living God. Hebrews 9:14

When we consider the work of Christ, we typically think of Paul's short summary statement to the Corinthians, "Christ died for our sins." (1 Corinthians 15:3). As we study Hebrews 9 we will see the depth of the work of Christ, the glorious details of his purifying blood, the security of his redemption, and much more. So as you read through look for the benefits we receive through Christ's work and the effect of His death.

ADDITIONAL PASSAGES TO READ
  • Leviticus 16 - The Day of Atonement

CONSIDER/MEDITATE AS YOU READ
  • What makes Christ work more effective than the Levitical Priest?

  • What are the benefits and effects believers receive from the death of Christ?

(REMINDER) THEMES OF HEBREWS

Christ is better. Throughout, we will see that Christ is better than angels, Moses, and Israel. He is the better high priest, sacrifice, mediator, and more. This theme will be a major part of Sunday morning sermons, focusing on the superiority of Jesus Christ.

Continuity of the Old and New Testaments. The New Testament is not a redo of the Old, but it is a continuation of the Old. You will see many references to Old Testament passages throughout the book of Hebrews. Many times these references will help you better understand Jesus, the Gospel, and the New Covenant.

Warning passages What is the warning? Don't miss Jesus! Pay attention to His message! Do not neglect Him! Do not be deceived by sin! Hold fast! Strive to enter His rest! Do not grow weary, and many more. The warnings are so great because Christ is superior, the Son of God, the only way into the House of God.
