THIS SUNDAY: Matthew 23:1-15
We move into Matthew 23. Jesus remains in the temple, and the crowd is gathered around him. The Pharisees and scribes remained there after publicly challenging him. This chapter is Jesus speaking, and he is bringing to reality the drama of the three parables from the previous two chapters. He will illustrate the consequences of heartless religion and bad spiritual leadership.
Read the whole chapter and then come back and meditate on verses 1-15.
In verses 1-15, summarize in one sentence the problem Jesus is highlighting about the scribes and Pharisees.
How is Jesus the opposite of the scribes and Pharisees?
Consider any places of authority you hold (in the home, at work, a teacher) and see if any of the ways of the Pharisees have crept into your leadership.
How can you be more like Jesus?
