THIS SUNDAY: 1 Peter 2:9-10

Our study of worship continues this week.

We moved to 1 Peter 2 last Sunday with the desire to see that "we worship because of Jesus". It is Jesus we come to because of what he has done (1:3, 18-21) and because of who he is, precious and chosen in the sight of God.

We also saw that our union with Christ through faith makes us living stones, like Him, and in that union, God is making with us a place, a people, and sacrifices for the sake of worship (2:5), built around Jesus the precious and chosen cornerstone of God.

As we turn our attention to verses 9-10, Peter gives us more detail about our identity and purpose as Christians. The interesting thing about these verses is that they are almost entirely made up of Old Testament references.

Meditations

As you read 1 Peter 2:9-10, focus on these three things. Find these three things in the text.

  1. Who are we? God's People.

  2. How are we God's People? By Mercy.

  3. Why has he made us His people? To worship and serve Him.

Read through Peter's OT references with the same focus.

WHO AND HOW?

  • Ex 19:5 Now therefore, if you will indeed obey my voice and keep my covenant, you shall be my treasured possession among all peoples, for all the earth is mine;

  • Deut 4:20 But the LORD has taken you and brought you out of the iron furnace, out of Egypt, to be a people of his own inheritance, as you are this day.

  • Deut 7:6 “For you are a people holy to the LORD your God. The LORD your God has chosen you to be a people for his treasured possession, out of all the peoples who are on the face of the earth. It was not because you were more in number than any other people that the LORD set his love on you and chose you, for you were the fewest of all peoples,

  • Deut 14:2 For you are a people holy to the LORD your God, and the LORD has chosen you to be a people for his treasured possession, out of all the peoples who are on the face of the earth.

WHY?

  • Ex 19:6 and you shall be to me a kingdom of priests and a holy nation.’ These are the words that you shall speak to the people of Israel.”

  • Is 42:12 Let them give glory to the LORD, and declare his praise in the coastlands.

  • Is 43:20b-21 The wild beasts will honor me, the jackals and the ostriches, for I give water in the wilderness, rivers in the desert, to give drink to my chosen people, the people whom I formed for myself that they might declare my praise.

  • Is 61:6 but you shall be called the priests of the LORD; they shall speak of you as the ministers of our God; you shall eat the wealth of the nations, and in their glory you shall boast.

Finally, seeing the similarities between the people of God in the OT and the people of God in the NT, what is the biggest difference? Jesus Christ the Cornerstone.

  • Luke 1:72-75 (Zechariah speaking about the coming Messiah) to show the mercy promised to our fathers and to remember his holy covenant, the oath that he swore to our father Abraham, to grant us that we, being delivered from the hand of our enemies, might serve him without fear, in holiness and righteousness before him all our days.

  • Rev 1:5-6 and from Jesus Christ the faithful witness, the firstborn of the dead, and the ruler of kings on earth. To him who loves us and has freed us from our sins by his blood and made us a kingdom, priests to his God and Father, to him be glory and dominion forever and ever. Amen.

  • Rev 21:3 And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, “Behold, the dwelling place of God is with man. He will dwell with them, and they will be his people, and God himself will be with them as their God.

What is Biblical Theology? Biblical theology is the discipline of learning how to read the Bible as one story by one divine author that culminates in the person and work of Christ, so that every part of Scripture is understood in relation to the eternal work of redemption.
