Sunday Prep 11/12

THIS SUNDAY: Matthew 10:16-42

As we get to verse 16, there seems to be a slight shift from the immediate context of sending out the twelve to looking forward to the persecution they will endure after the resurrection and ascension of Christ.

We have titled this chapter, Gospel Ministry Fundamentals. Jesus is teaching the disciples the realities of serving the kingdom and living for his name's sake. Some of the teaching is for the apostles only, as they do gospel ministry, and some will be general truths for disciples throughout church history, including us.

Again, please keep in mind the distinction between prescriptive and descriptive texts. Descriptive communicates information. Prescriptive give instructions or commands.

As you read this section, notice a pattern: caution and assurance. This pattern is all through the remainder of this chapter.

Consider/Meditate

  • What do you notice about the cautions?

  • What do you notice about the assurances?

Other Passages to Read:

  • Micah

  • 1 Peter 3:8-4:19

Catchesim Question and Answer:

Question 41: What is the sum of the Ten Commandments?

A. The sum of the ten commandments is to love the Lord our God with all our heart, with all our soul, with all our strength, and with all our mind; and our neighbor as ourselves (Mat 22:37-40).
