THIS SUNDAY: Matthew 17:24-27
Lord willing, we will be back in the Gospel According to Matthew this week and for the rest of November. We are entering Jesus's final teachings before His great entrance into Jerusalem, which is also the final week of his life.
Understanding the Context
Read Exodus 30:11-16. This gives the context of the "two-drachma tax". It helps explain its origin and purpose. Find the gospel shadows in this passage, and consider how they are brought to light in Christ.
Understanding the Main Point
Jesus is establishing a gospel reality and also a principle for life.
Gospel Reality: Jesus is the Son of God, and all who are with Him are sons of God.
Life Principle: Sometimes we must forfeit our freedoms and privileges as royal sons and daughters to avoid offending the world around us.
(Warning: Can this principle be taken too far? Has the modern church taken this principle too far? If yes, then how?)
Sunday School
This week we will start a study on Biblical Theology.
What is Biblical Theology? Biblical theology is the discipline of learning how to read the Bible as one story by one divine author that culminates in the person and work of Christ, so that every part of Scripture is understood in relation to the eternal work of redemption.
The bible has one main theme, redemption, but it has many sub-themes that weave in and out around the main. These would be covenant, priesthood, temple, sacrifice, etc. During this study, we will understand what Biblical Theology is, how to recongize it in the scriptures, and then how to use it to study the scriptures.
