Catechism Sermon Series: Q34. What is sanctification?

March Catchesim Question and Answer:

Question 34: What is sanctification?

A. Sanctification is the work of God’s Spirit (2Th 2:13), whereby we are renewed in the whole man after the image of God (Eph 4:24), and are enabled more and more to die to sin, and live to righteousness (Rom 6:11).

Additional Passages to Read

  • Romans 6

  • 1 Thessalonians 4

To Consider and Meditate

  • Are you in pursuit of Christlikeness?

  • Do you desire holiness (to love what God loves, and hate what God hates?)

  • Do you seek Christ and holiness in his Word, prayer, and in the gathering of the saints?

A Reminder of Why We Are Using a Catechism

The aim of this practice is to

  • "be filled with the knowledge of his will in all spiritual wisdom and understanding" (Col 1:9),

  • "grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ" (2 Pt 3:18),

  • "all attain to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to mature manhood, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ (Ep 4:13)

for the sake of

  • "walking in a manner worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing to him: bearing fruit of every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God, being strengthened with all power according to his glorious might, for all endurance and patience with joy" (Col 1:10-11)

  • "no longer being children, tossed to and fro by the waves and carried about by every wind of doctrine, by human cunning, by craftiness in deceitful schemes. Rather, speaking the truth in love, growing up... into Christ... being joined and held together by Christ... equipped... working properly... and being built up in love.
