Getting Ready for Sunday 10/16

THIS SUNDAY

As we resume our study of Hebrews, we will take a closer look at the effects of the blood of Christ applied to a sinner.

The words, phrases, and ideas of this passage that stand out are:

  • purge

  • purify

  • perfected

  • take away sins

  • sacrifice

  • offering

  • sanctified

For by a single offering He has perfected for all time those who are being sanctified. -Hebrews 10:14

ADDITIONAL PASSAGES TO READ
  • 1 Peter 1:1-2

  • 1 Thessalonians 4:3-8

  • Romans 6:22

  • Ephesians 1:3-10

CONSIDER/MEDITATE AS YOU READ
  • Is your understanding of "forgiveness of sin" self-exalting or Christ-exalting?

  • Is your understanding of "forgiveness of sin" simply seen for your good or for God's glory?

  • Why does God want to forgive sin? What is his purpose?

  • Should Christians be less sinful than unbelievers?

  • Can Christians ever be sinless in this life?

(REMINDER) THEMES OF HEBREWS

Christ is better. We will see that Christ is better than angels, Moses, and Israel. He is the better high priest, sacrifice, mediator, and more. This theme will be a major part of Sunday morning sermons, focusing on the superiority of Jesus Christ.

Continuity of the Old and New Testaments. The New Testament is not a redo of the Old but a continuation of the Old. You will see many references to Old Testament passages throughout the book of Hebrews. Often, these references will help you better understand Jesus, the Gospel, and the New Covenant.

Warning passages What is the warning? Don't miss Jesus! Pay attention to His message! Do not neglect Him! Do not be deceived by sin! Hold fast! Strive to enter His rest! Do not grow weary, and many more. The warnings are great because Christ is superior, the Son of God, the only way into the House of God.

SONGS WE ARE LEARNING

Hymn of the Month

BE IN PRAYER

  • that our church and the churches around us will preach Christ, exalt God, and not make Christianity man-centered.

  • for the sanctification of the saints of OBC. That we are being cleansed of all unrighteousness and being made more like Christ.

  • As our men and women continue to gather, pray that both will be honest in fellowship about struggles, hidden sin, and temptations. Give thanks to the Lord for your brothers and sister who care about your soul.

Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you. 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18
